Allen West urges lifting of U.K. travel ban on Michael Savage

When Allen West gave the standing-ovation-studded closing keynote speech at CPAC several weeks ago, one of his emphases — as in many other speeches he’s given — is that America must return to respecting Constitutional principles. That includes the First Amendment — and West recently went to bat for a man whose exercise of his free-speech rights has made him some enemies “across the pond.”

Radio talk-show host Michael Savage is banned from visiting the United Kingdom because some in Britain don’t like his anti-statist, anti-Islamist opinions.  Whether you love or hate Michael Savage, it’s beyond insulting for an American citizen to be treated this way. Allen West recently wrote a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urging her to look into the case:

Dear Madam Secretary:

I am writing to you on behalf of Dr. Michael Savage, a conservative talk show host who has been banned from entering the United Kingdom. I respectfully request that the Department of State review this matter.

The United Kingdom Home Secretary, on May 5, 2009, published a list of 16 persons banned from entering the United Kingdom. Dr. Savage is included on that list which also contains the names of Russian skinheads imprisoned for murdering 10 immigrants and a Hamas terrorist who executed two Jewish parents and who brutally murdered their four-year-old daughter.

Dr. Savage, who has never called for, nor directly instigated violence in any way, I believe does not deserve to be on any list that involves such blatant acts of atrocity committed by such ruthless criminals.

To add insult to injury, it appears that the primary reason Savage was placed on the no-travel list was that the British Home Office feared being hit with the dreaded “Islamophobe!” label, and needed to pad its list with some non-Muslims. World Net Daily reports:

Savage has documented his battle over the ban in his book “Banned in Britain,” which includes official correspondence, released under the U.K.’s freedom-of-information law, that reveals a decision was made at the highest level of government to use his name to provide “balance” to a “least wanted” list dominated by Muslim extremists.

“We will want to ensure that the names disclosed reflect the broad range of cases and are not all Islamic extremists,” reads a draft recommendation, marked “Restricted,” that was obtained as part of Savage’s libel lawsuit against the government and the home secretary.

More from Congressman West’s letter:

Dr. Savage hosts one of the most popular talk shows in the United States and regularly receives approximately eight million listeners weekly on over 400 radio stations across the nation. Five days a week, Dr. Savage exercises his right of free speech as an American, a right that should not be used to deter his travel to the United Kingdom.

Madam Secretary, please do not let the United Kingdom’s policy be used as a model for other countries around the world. Please let our model of freedom of speech be the impetus of change around the world.

Our thanks go to Congressman West for taking action to defend a private American citizen — and helping shore up freedom of speech against constant erosion by the forces of political correctness, and especially by those who would sell out our freedom to appease radical Islam.
